Font Research

Font One

In my opinion, I feel this font is bubbly and depicts a energetic theme that can be associated with the comedy genre. It has a slight resemblance to the film poster's font I researched in my textual analysis too. However, because it is bubbly I believe it will be rejected by my target audience because it appears quite childish and doesn't match there interests.

Font Two

Similarly to font one, I like the energetic theme being generated here. However, it still provokes a sense of immaturity and seems to be more suited to a children's film rather then a film for  15-25 year old.

Font Three

Personally, I find this particular font better then the previous two. Mainly because it isn't too exaggerated and still matches the audience's expectations without trying too hard. This is because, in contrast to the other film posters I have researched, this font is the most similar. Therefore, it won't be rejected by its target audience because there expectations will have been met and satisfied.

Font Four

Font four is similar too font three and generates the same meanings. In my opinion, I feel this font would be best for the main title on the film poster purely because it is more bold and curvy edges seem easier on the eyes and more appealing. In contrast to font three, I still like font three but I feel it will have a greater purpose as a tagline mainly because it looks the same as font four but is less bold. Therefore, it will not have as greater emphasis but would still create a sense of continuity because it looks similar.

Sound Research from Garage Band

Researching Sounds

http://www.pacdv.com/sounds/free-music.html

This website was very useful because it was easy to access an appropriate sound track called "Kickstarter" easily and effectively. However, it didn't allow me too save the soundtracks so unfortunately I was unable to use it. This caused a problem because I found that one particular track consisted of much more musical flavour then any of my "Dance Beats" from "Garage Band" did. This contrasted the different soundtracks my target audience would of enjoyed. Therefore, making my trailer interesting and enticing for the viewer. Overall though, progress has been good and more research is needed.

http://www.pacdv.com/sounds/transportation_sounds.html

This is the same website I was unable to use for soundtracks. However, it allowed me to download and use sound effects. Firstly, I went too the "Vehicle" section and downloaded certain car noises that would represent the car sounds in my animatic that you will here in my actual trailer when it's finished.

http://www.pacdv.com/sounds/voices-1.html

This part of the website offered me a variety of noises made by humans I could use as diegetic in my animatic. In my actual trailer all of these noises will have been created by my actors. However, the sounds I found here are a good substitute and will generate the same purpose as my trailer when it is finished. Overall, the diegetic sound effects proved effective and will help me visualise my trailer in a more articulate way.

Saving Sounds from www.pacdv.com/sounds/free-music.html

Stage 1

To save sound effects I clicked "Ctrl + Right Click" on the track I wanted to download. After that, I pressed "Save Linked File As..." and this opened up a window in "Finder".

Stage 2

Finally, I found the folder "A2 Sound Research" and pressed "Save" so that my new soundtrack was in an accessible place for future purposes.

Music found from College

This is music that I found on a CD from College. I originally thought it would have some music I could use in my trailer that would appeal to my target audience. However, the following sounds you hear in this video are extremely childish and would be very disorientating for my audience to listen too. Personally, it the type of music you would expect on a children's cartoon.

Flatplans & Rationales

Film Poster: First Draft

The image above shows the first draft of my film poster and depicts the narrative of the film through the use of familiar locations associated with Road Trips, for instance roads and forests. However, the reason it isn't finished is because it isn't feasible and I don't access the industrial equipment to create a film poser like this. The original idea of this film poster was to use the road and beach at the end in order to portray the narrative and what the main characters main aim is throughout the film. Moreover, the bar and school are binary opposites so they were positioned opposite to each other in order to suggest this. They are also locations young teenagers can empathise with and the idea was also inspired by "The Inbetweeners Movie" film poster because of there us of locations too. Overall though, this idea wasn't going to work and I don’t have the correct range of skills in Photoshop to create something of this quality.

Film Poster: Second Draft

After being unsuccessful with my first film poster idea, my teacher suggested researching another film poster would be helpful for generating further ideas. I looked at the 'Road Trip' film poster for ideas because 'Road Trip' is also a comedy film that follows the same codes and conventions as 'The Inbetweeners Movie'. Furthermore, it was also a comparable audience profile for 'The Inbetweeners Movie' so I could rely on it as good inspiration. Therefore, similar to the 'Superbad', 'Inbetweeners' and 'Road Trip' film posters, I decided all my main characters needed to be in the picture because I wanted my audience to make assumptions about there personalities just by reading there body language and facial expressions on the picture. For instance, Cedric is positioned on the left to suggest he is the main character and will primarily push the narrative forward. Moreover, Tim is positioned on top of the car with a goofy facial expression in order to suggest he is weak minded that charecter that evokes most of the porblems for the group. This is because his postion on the car is adnormal and people would consider it as a stupid thing to do. Jake on the other hand is postioned inside the car on the right, this suggests he dosen't play a huge part to the narrative but agrovates the other charecters and forces them to do stuff that they are against. Straight away there is a clear binary opposite of charecters being portrayed on the poster.

On the top left of the screen, the posters tagline asks my target audience the question, "When your 18, what can't you do?" This is a rhetorical question that is used to integrate my target audience into the film poster and feel a part of the message the film is generating. Moreover, it is emphasised with the colour yellow connotes fun and energy. This reinforces the comedy genres codes and conventions and reflects on "The Inbetweeners Movie" poster too because that also uses similar colours for the same reason.

Furthermore, the title of the film has some relation with the tagline because it both has the number "18" in it in order to emphasise the target audience and the relation they have with the characters. The colour red signifies there mischief and also relates to the "Superbad"film poster's colour scheme. This depicts continuity between comedy films posters. I also used the "Road Trip" film poster's layout as inspiration by positioning the bold title at the top right so the spectator would notice it and become enticed straight away.

Lastly, the characters all have different coloured tops on in order to signify the different connotations ont he psoter. For instance, Tim has a red top on to connote his mischief, Seth has a yellow top on to connote the characters energy and create continuity between the tagline and himself. Moreover, Jake has a dark green top on to suggest he is sneaky and immature, whereas Cedric has a white shirt on to depict his formal, mature and pure personality. The car also reinforces the title "My 18th Road Trip" because cars are associated with the roads.

Film Magazine

Firstly, my film magazine follows very similar colour schemes and font types similar to my film poster. For example, the tagline at the very top is the common location for taglines to be positioned on film magazines. This is because it will be the first item the spectator will see on the magazine and will therefore want to know more about it because it creates an enigma with it's persuasive tone. It is also yellow to suggest this energetic and exciting film idea that my film poster also generated. Furthermore, the tagline reinforces the narrative of the film  by using words like "Travelling" because 'Travel' is a word associated with Road Trips. This is similar to the "Inception" film magazine because I have taken the idea of adopting the films narrative as the  main theme of the magazine. This will then create a sense of continuity and emphasise the film magazines purpose.  Underneath the tagline is the title of the magazine. It's name, "La Film" sounds French and suggests the magazine is internationally popular and read by people around the world. This will make my target audience expect interesting factors to the magazine and will therefore want to buy it because of that reason. The bold red text is used in order to signify it's importance and also the mischief of the films narrative and characters because red is used to connote evil and immaturity.

Sell lines follow the same colour scheme by using red and yellow text in order to suggest continuity throughput the magazine and also reinforce what's on offer for the consumer. The sellines make is clear it as also adopted the films theme because the colour scheme connotes the same meanings as the title.

In the centre we have three of the four main characters. Cedric, who is the dominant figure has been centrally placed because he is the main character. Similar to the reason why he was placed on the left of the film poster, it signifies his purpose. His costume is the same as it was on the film poster because I am trying to create a sense of continuity between the films advertisement in order to keep the consumer orientated. The other two characters; Jake & Seth are placed behind him to suggest they are his friends but don't have as an important role too the narrative. However, because they appear too behind him it suggests they are close to Cedric but have a certain control over, almost as if they are creating the metaphor for Cedric's good and bad concious. The audience can make the assumption that Jake is evil and immature because of his occurring facial expression throughout my films advertisement that appears evil. On the other hand, Seth still looks genuine and is wearing the same costume in order too connote his energetic personality and loyalty too Cedric.

Finally, the title of the film is positioned over the characters in order to signify they are part of the film and theme of the magazine. The bold text provokes the title's dominance and will appeal to my target audience because the same colour scheme is being used for continuity. The text type is also the same as it was for the title on my films poster, therefore this signifies the continuity between my products too. Furthermore, similar to my tagline, the secondary tagline also uses the same colour scheme and words such as 'Journey' which again, is suggesting my magazine has adopted my films narrative because that word is also associated with Road Trips.

  1. What would you expect from a comedy genre?
  2. What films do you associate with this genre?
  3. What kind of typical narrative set pieces do you expect to see?
  4. What kind of iconography do you expect?
  5. What's your favourite feeling you gain after watching a comedy film?

  • One liners, people hurting themselves.
  • The Hangover would be associated with a comedy and films like.
  • It is funny when the narrative has a realistic feel to it. Also everyday life which is similar to what my Facebook audience said too.
  • Funny situations lead on to different jokes.
  • Common props like alcohol is commone which is also prior to what I said in my research too. Furthermore, schools are commonly used and holidays don’t necessary need to be used to be funny.
  • At the end it usually makes you feel good.

Location Shoot

Mood-board, Timeline & Synopsis of My Idea

This is my mood-board that conveys the repertoire, shot types, locations and costumes  of my chosen genre in a visual way. They all stimulate ideas that relate to my textual analysis and are all spaced closely together in order to portray an exciting and energetic feel that is commonly provoked in the comedy genre. Similar connotations were present in the trailers, posters and magazines I analysed in my textual analysis too.

Timeline

Synopsis
Four boys, all aged 18, except for Cedric whose 18th birthday is soon about to arrive all finish sixth form for summer break. However, little does Cedric know that his three goofy friends are planning a massive 18th birthday road trip to all different locations of there choice. Although, the one place they primarily aim to attend is summer beach party there entire year has organised. However, will they get there? Or will there weak minds divert them from there main aim to something more ridiculous and unexpected?

My Ideas in Reflection to My Textual Analysis

Textual Analysis Conclusion

In conclusion, I have noticed a common trend in the use of colour schemes that suggest postive vibes and connotations throughout the film trailers. For example, The Inbetweeners Movie uses vibrant colours in order to portray the charecters personalitys and energy. Similarly to Superbad when the bubbly intertitles generate fun and excitment because all the colours such as yellow and light blue have postive connotations.

Furthermore, I have noticed a continuity in the use of charecters. For example, Will and Fogull both appear the same and maintain the same status at school and everyday life. Wheras, Jay and Seth portray themselves as immature, foolish boys that only care about woman and status of male dominance over the other charecters. Moreover, Simon and Evan convey a sense of awkwardness and evoke empathy with the audience as they are both genuine but unpredictiple at certain times.

Charecters have a huge importance on the narrative too. The main charecters always create a synario or a task which leads to a humourous prediciment within the trailers. Every other charecter that isn't as important create a tagent to the narrative but emphasise and contribute to the storyline of what the main charecters are doing.

Locations vary dramatically but both trialers seem to convey a school or local area of living that is sturdy and full of intertesting charecters. Furthermore, the change of enviroments can reinforce the narrative of the film and also create an enigma because the audience will want to know why they are there.

Overall, these are the main factors that make a comedy trailer effective, and editing pace works in unison with sound to emphasise the cinematorgraphy in the trialer. For instance, both films have very short durated shots supported by music that represents the theme. However, when the shots are longer, both trailers seem to cut out non-diegetic sound in order to emphasise the dialouge and humourous acitons on screen.
